Active School Week 2019
Tuesday
We started off our Active School Week with some warm up games for each class led by our excellent AS Committee members. Our infants played Dance Tag and What Time is it Mr. Wolf. The 1st and 2nd class children played X's and O's and a fun tag game called Octopus Tag. Our 3rd and 4th class enjoyed some Bridges and Rivers while 5th and 6th class played some King of the Ring. It was a really fun start to our week and everyone was excited to start getting active!
On Tuesday afternoon our AS Committee introduced some cooperative games to all our classes. Each class tried a variety of games from Pass the Hula Hoop, Mat Races and Caterpillar Riot! The children really enjoyed playing the games and working together to have lots of fun. Everyone was really involved and it was nice for the children to have the chance to take part in some cooperative games.
Wednesday
The first half of our Wednesday fell victim to the weather. We had reached out to Offaly GAA as part of our 5 Star Initiative to borrow their Fun & Run kit. We tested out some of the exercises inside instead and hope to make full use of the kit later on in the year. We were very grateful to Liam O'Reilly for allowing us to borrow the set and look forward to borrowing it again in the near future!
For the afternoon on Wednesday our AS Committee wanted to target a sport that we don't play as often as we should, especially as Games was our theme. They chose to try to develop our tennis skills. We obtained some drills and ideas from Tennis Ireland and had each class try a variety of activities helped by our committee members. It was a really fun afternoon and we hope to try some more tennis skills in our PE classes in the future!
Thursday
Thursday was our Children's Choice day for our Active School Week. Our AS Committee polled each classroom to see what activity they would like to take part in. Our infants did some GoNoodle in their classroom. The 1st and 2nd class played indoor rounders. 3rd and 4th played Strategy while 5th and 6th class played dodgeball. It was a very enjoyable day and it was great to give our children a voice in their AS activities!
Friday
Our Friday morning of Active Week coincided with our Communion preparation. We were able to take part in a whole school walk.
We took part in a challenge in conjunction with Hockey Ireland for the last part of our AS Week. The AS Committee set up a skills challenge in the hall for our classes to take part in. We also played some hockey games including King of the Ring!
Active School Week Preparation
Our AS Committee have been very hard at work preparing for Active School Week. AS Week is an annual fixture on our calendar and this year it will be taking place from Tuesday 7th May to Friday 10th May.
The committee have been brainstorming and working hard to come up with lots of fun ideas for the week. Our theme this year is games so stay tuned to our page here for updates and pictures throughout that week.
One of our new initiatives, that also ties in with our renewal criteria, is the idea of Active Homework. Our committee have been emphasising how important it is to get 60 mins of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. We want that message to carry home too so during AS Week our children will be swapping one piece of written homework for a physical activity instead!
We're really looking forward to the week; stay tuned for updates!

Christmas Active Day
On Wednesday 19th December we celebrated a Christmas Active Day in our school. Our AS Committee did a great job organising lots of different activities for our classes to take part in.
In the morning we had Christmas themed warm-up games and station activities.
The Infant classes played Scrooge Tag to warm up, the 1st/2nd class played a game called Jack Frost while the 3rd - 6th classes enjoyed a snowball fight!
Each class also took part in the stations that were organised and run by our committee - Muireann, Sarah, Mark, Cameron, Chloe and Patrick Óg all worked very hard making sure each class had fun.
Our stations included:
1. Decorate the Tree Relay
2. Feed the Reindeer
3. Christmas Musical Hula Hoops
In the afternoon each class group played a game taken from the winter Olympics to fit in with our focus on GAMES and the theme of Christmas/Winter. Our committee suggested ice hockey but we were a little short of ice so we had to make do with indoor hockey! Each class had lots of fun and we really enjoyed our Christmas Active Day!

Cumann na mBunscol success - back to back!
Once again we were very busy with our school team in Cumann na mBunscol action. We were training and playing matches since our return to school in September and once again were fortunate enough to have our children represent the school in a final in Bórd na Móna O'Connor Park, Tullamore. Mr. Brady and Mr. Wynne were delighted with how the team performed on the day and the children produced a winning performance. It was another great year and again we would like to thank the parents, St. Brigid's GAA and Tom Darcy for all their help and support during the year so far. Both the teachers and children are very appreciative of the support!
School football
Our school football training continued this year. The boys and girls from 3rd - 6th class were put through their paces by Mr.Brady during lunch time in September and October. It was great to have such big numbers out training and have so many children being really active. It is also a huge help to our school football team taking part in the Cumann na mBunscol competition.
New year, new committee, same Active attitude!
We have already resumed our Active School activities for the new school year. Tag rugby coaching has been completed with 3rd - 6th class and is now ongoing with Infants - 2nd class. With our activities up and running we're also delighted to be able to announce our new Active School Committee. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for some activities as we gather ideas and have our first few meetings.
2017/2018

On Tuesday, our morning activities were changed by the weather but thankfully our Active School Committee were able to think quickly and organise some indoor games. Our Infants all the way to 6th class played some games called 'Rob the Nest' and 'Xs and Os'. They had a really good morning and we are very lucky to have our hall that let us get active despite the weather!

Offaly GAA - Football Coaching
All of our classes will be taking part in 10 weeks of football coaching. Offaly GAA coach, Paula Harte, will be putting the children through their paces every Friday. It is a great chance for each of the classes to get out and get active. The coaching is already underway and the children are very excited to be getting this opportunity.
Medal Presentation
We were very fortunate to have Offaly GAA footballer and Croghan native Cian Donoghue visit us to present our Cumann na mBunscol medals. Cian, who represents St. Brigid's and Offaly senior footballers, was also a very successful primary schools footballer and was able to share some words of wisdom with our footballers to help them follow in his footsteps and wear an Offaly jersey in the future. We were delighted to be able to welcome him back to the school.
Christmas Active Day:
Our Active School were hard at work over the past number of weeks to prepare for our Christmas Active Day. The day went really well with the early part of the day focusing on the Dance strand, our targeted strand for this year. Following this, we played some Christmas themed games. We finished by allowing the different class groups to play games chosen for them by their Active School representatives.
We would like to thank our Active School students - Killian, Ailbhe, Odhrán, Sophie, Olivia and Marcus. They were excellent at organising and running the different activities. They even managed to squeeze in some DJing, playing some Christmas songs to make sure everyone was in the Christmas spirit!

Cumann na mBunscol success!
This year has been very busy so far for all our footballers in the school. The Cumann na mBunscol competitions have been in full flow since our return in September and all our boys and girls worked very hard at training and matches over the last number of weeks.
All their hard work was on display as we were lucky enough to have our students represent the school in three finals at Bórd na Móna O'Connor Park in Tullamore.
We were well represented by 8 girls from our school on the Parish team that successfully won their competition for the first time.
Ten of the boys in our school were also involved when they helped the combined schools team bridge a 14-year gap to win their championship.
Finally, our school team were delighted to win our own final after an excellent game against Clonbullogue.
It has been a hectic few weeks and everyone in the school would like to thank the parents, St. Brigids GAA and Tom Darcy for helping us out throughout the year with transport, pitches and some treats for the children as well. It is very much appreciated by all of the teachers and children in the school. Once again, well done to all involved!

Active School Committee 2017/18
Our AS Committee for the upcoming school year has been chosen. We are delighted to have six new members to help us organise lots of Active School events throughout the year. A boy and a girl were chosen out of each classroom from 1st to 6th. The lucky children that were elected onto our committee will be having meetings in the upcoming weeks to start planning some activities!
Ladies Football
This year we are very lucky to have so many girls interested in playing football that we were again able to have an all-girls school team. Thanks to Mr. Brady's hard work, we were able to organise a game for the girls to take part in against our near neighbours, Ballybryan NS. It was an excellent game with all our girls putting in an excellent performance - you could see their training with Mr. Brady paying off! We hope to be able to organise another game for the girls during the year.
Tag Rugby Coaching
We are very lucky to have a coach, Gráinne, from Leinster Rugby to come out to our school to provide coaching for the children in 3rd - 6th class. We will have coaching every Friday for 4 weeks. The children really enjoy the training and it is a great, active way to finish our week in school. The children get to play lots of fun rugby based games and increase their understanding of some of the rules of rugby as well!
New School Year, Same Active Attitude!
Our Active School activities have resumed for the new school year, 2017/18 and now that we have our Active School Flag we are going to be working even harder to make sure we all stay active. We hope to elect our new committee in the next few weeks and to get to work planning lots of Active Events in our school!
2016/2017
FLAG RAISING CEREMONY!
At the beginning of June our school had its accreditation visit to see whether we would be successful in our application to receive an Active School Flag. As you may have noticed on our blog section, we were successful!
As a result of our success we held a flag raising ceremony to mark our achievement. We invited Special Olympics athlete Patrick Moore back to our school to be the one to raise the flag on the day. Patrick was our special guest at our very first Active School Week and we were very grateful that he was willing to come back and raise the flag.
Mr. Brady gave an excellent speech on the day and he thanked all the people that have worked so hard to help us achieve our flag. He acknowledged the outstanding work done by our committee, our children, our parents, our staff and the people in the community that have helped us on our journey.
We were all absolutely thrilled to watch our Active Flag fly high in front of our school. Thank you again to everyone that has helped in any way!

Champions League 2017
Following on from our successful Euros competition last year, this year we divided our 3rd - 6th class children into teams to take part in the Champions League. The children were divided into six teams - Barcelona, Juventus, Monaco, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
We first played out a group stage. We had two groups of three teams. When these games were completed the top two teams from each group qualified for the Champions League semi-final. The bottom team in each group would play the Europa League final. This made sure that everyone got to play at least three games.

Europa League
Our Europa League final was contested by Atletico Madrid and Monaco. It was an excellent game and Monaco took an early two goal lead thanks to their captain, Daniel O' Brien. Atletico pulled one back in the second half when Joshua Kellaghan scored a super header. This left us with a tense finish!
Both teams had chances in the closing stages but there was to be no more goals as Monaco held on to win!

Champions League
Juventus and Barcelona qualified for the Champions League final. It was a thrilling, end-to-end contest between two really evenly matched teams. Ross Kellaghan gave Barcelona an early lead with an excellent individual goal. However, Juventus equalised in the second half when James Scully fired low to the net after a well worked corner by Ben Kennedy. At the final whistle, this meant our teams were level at 1-1, the game would be decided by a penalty shoot-out!
The shoot-out, like the game itself, was very tight and it was soon sudden death. When Juventus missed their final penalty, it was left to Lara Ferrari with a chance to win it for Barcelona. She coolly stepped up and blasted an excellent shot into the right top corner which meant Barcelona were the champions after a very dramatic final!

Sports Day 2017
We recently held our annual Sports Day in the school. In the morning there were different stations run by the teachers and all of our class groups got a chance to have a turn at each station. Ms.Reynolds had a really fun obstacle course set up, Mr. Brady played basketball games, Mr. Wynne did soccer and Ms.Sullivan played benchball and other games in the school hall.
In the afternoon, all of the children were treated to an ice-cream after all their activity earlier in the day!
Following this, the classes did different types of novelty races with their class teacher including potato and spoon races, sack races and wheelbarrow races. Mr.Wynne and Mr. Brady's classes even finished the day with an endurance race.

Active School Tours!
On Wednesday 7th June, our 3rd - 6th class went on their school tour to Derrymore Springs in Killucan, Co. Westmeath. It is a man-made lake that allowed the children to take part in lots of fun water and land based activities. It was great to be able to have such an active and fun school tour. The children really enjoyed themselves and even offered their review of the day:
"First, we played a game and there were 4 groups, trying to get a ball into different tyres. It was called tyre ball. After, we went for a nature walk. We saw lots of plants and trees. Then we ate our lunch. After lunch, we went swimming on the lake. There were blow up trampolines slides climbing frames and a climbing ball. After we went on pedal boats and kayaks. I went in a pedal boat and a kayak. Then, before we went home, we had the rest of our lunch. It was a really fun day." - Michael Brennan, 3rd class
"On Wednesday 7th June, the pupils of 3rd - 6th class went on our school tour to Derrymore Springs in County Westmeath. We arrived there at 9:30 that morning. When we arrived there, we got separated into two groups - 3rd & 4th class and 5th & 6th class. 3rd and 4th played a game called tyre ball while 5th and 6th went for a nature walk. When 5th and 6th came back from the nature walk, we swapped activities. After that we all met up again and had lunch. After lunch we got into our swimming gear and put on wet suits. 5th & 6th class went kayaking first while 3rd & 4th class went swimming in the lake. There were some objects in the water such as slides, trampoline and Saturn. Saturn was an inflatable object that looked like the planet Saturn! After that, we got out of the lake and 5th & 6th class got in. 3rd & 4th class then went kayaking. When we were finished that we got dressed and finished our lunch before getting back on the bus and arriving back at school at 3:40. I would love to go back there. It really was a great school tour!" - Ailbhe McCabe, 4th class

Football Blitz
Here in Scoil Bhríde, we were delighted to see the beautiful weather that came this week.
Using this great opportunity, Mr. Brady and Mr. Wynne organised a school blitz for the children from 3rd - 6th class to go along with their usual training.
The children were divided into three teams and each team got to play two games each. The first few games even took place during our lunch break so the children from Junior Infants - 2nd were able to come out and watch the games. We had a sell-out crowd!
The children really enjoyed getting to partake in some extra games and being cheered on by the other children.
To conclude our blitz, Mr. Brady even allowed the three teams to take part in a penalty shoot-out!
It was great to be able to take advantage of the wonderful sunshine we had this week.

Monday
To begin ASW, our AS Committee members designed an obstacle course for all the classes to take part in. We decided to start with this as the obstacle course was a very popular part of our last Active Week and many other Active Days we have had in the school. The course was designed by Kayla Fleming, Dylan McLoughlin, Dylan Curley, Cameron Egan, Áine Scully and Regan Kelly, the members of our Active School Committee. Áine instructed the different class groups,Cameron and Dylan Curley ensured the equipment was looked after and Dylan McLoughlin and Kayla performed demonstrations for the different class groups. The children really enjoyed testing themselves on the course!

The 1st-6th class children all played a sport that was also taken from the suggestion envelope - tag rugby! It was one of the most suggested activities by the children themselves so we were very happy to be able to include it in our Active Week.

On Thursday we were very lucky to have some parents volunteer to help out with our Active School Week. They played lots of different games with each of the classes and made sure there was something for everyone to enjoy. They even managed to focus on our theme for the year, athletics, by including some really fun relay races! We were very grateful to the parents for helping us with our Active School Week!

Friday
The final day of our Active School Week for 2017 was a very special one. We were lucky enough to have a very special guest visit our school on the day. In keeping with our focus on athletics, we were delighted to have well known athlete, Pauline Curley, join us for the afternoon.
Pauline was very good at answering all the questions our children had about her and her career as a successful athlete. As a special treat, Pauline even took the children out to practice some running and stretching on the yard - all of the classes were delighted to be coached by an Olympic athlete! We would like to say a big thank you to Pauline for giving up her time to help us celebrate our Active School Week!

Christmas Active Day
Our school held a very successful active day to mark the Christmas holidays. We got to take part in lots of fun activities!
In the morning, all our classes took part in an obstacle course. Áine Scully (Active School committee member) organised the classes and made sure everything ran smoothly - she even got the different classes to sing their favourite Christmas songs. Áine was helped by Cameron Egan, Regan Kelly and Dylan Curley who made sure everyone was safe and knew what to do on the course. The children really enjoyed going around the obstacle course!

After that, each of the classes did different activities - one between break and lunch, and another in the afternoon. These activities were chosen based on the suggestions envelope in our school and the input of our committee. The committee helped to run these activities also and they were excellent once again. All of our classes had lots of fun!

Scoil Bhríde European Championship:
Euro 2016 fever took hold of our school this week as the 3rd - 6th classes took part in our very own version of the tournament. The children were divided into eight teams and represented countries taking part in the competition - France, England, Germany, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Belgium and of course the Republic of Ireland.
The tournament was divided into two groups of four to make sure every team got to play at least three games. The games were played on our school court and the teams not playing surrounded the pitch and cheered for the children that were playing. It really was great fun!
After our group games, we were left with semi-finals. After these were played, France and England had reached the final.

ACTIVE SCHOOL WEEK 2016:
This year in Scoil Bhríde, we held our first ever Active School Week!
The ASW initiative is about providing FUN and INCLUSIVE physical activity opportunities for ALL members of the school community. It allows schools to reinforce the message that not only is physical activity good for you but it also very enjoyable.
MONDAY:
To begin our very first ASW, we went on a school trip to Mount Lucas Wind Farm. While we were there we went on a whole school walk exploring all the wind-turbines that were there. We did lots of different walking and running activities while we were there. We even had a race with Mr. Wynne to see who could get back to our base first!

Offaly Sports Partnership
Throughout the year we have been working closely with the Offaly Sports Partnership to help us achieve our Active Flag.
Representatives from the Offaly Sports Partnership visited our school in October for some initial testing on the children. They carried out 60m sprints and 1 minute time trials. All of the children had a go at these two events.
Following this we set about improving and increasing the amount of physical activity the children received in our school. We worked on a number of initiatives to try to ensure we improved over the course of the year.
Recently, Jean Brady, Offaly camogie player and representative of the Offaly Sports Partnership, returned to complete the second set of testing on the children.
We were delighted to find that every class in the school had reported improvements from their initial trial in October. It was also pointed out to us that each class in the school had exceeded the county average in both tests!
We are very proud of the work all the children have put in to try and improve physical activity in the school and this goes to show just how much our hard work has paid off!

Desk to 5k initiative!
In January and February 2016, all of our classes took part in our whole school initiative to go from sitting at our desks to being able to run a whole 5 k!
The first step in the process involved calculating how many laps of our school yard would make up 1 kilometre so we could begin our training. The 5th and 6th class carried this out with Mr. Brady's help.
We then began training. Every morning, each class carried out a different piece of physical activity to help us increase our fitness levels. We would then practice running laps of our school yard every Friday.
After 6 weeks of fun training, we were ready to run our 5 k!
Our whole school walked down to our local GAA pitch, St. Brigid's GAA in Croghan, who kindly allowed us to use their facilities to complete our 5 k run. We used the astro turf walkway surrounding the pitch to complete laps.
All of the classes took part and kept track of the amount of laps they needed to run to complete their task. We has so much fun and it felt great to know that we had accomplished our goals!
Afterwards, we all walked back to school and were rewarded with a bottle of water for our efforts. We really had a lot of fun over the six weeks!
